The Maple tree denotes strength and endurance which is partially why it is an iconic symbol of Canada. Known for its distinctive leaves, striking colour, and sap which can be turned into syrup, having a maple tree on our property can provide joy year-round!

While maple trees are known for being sturdy, they still require proper care as they are vulnerable to pests and diseases. To maintain their overall health and appearance, here are a few steps on how to properly care of a maple tree:

Caring for a Maple Tree

1. Water regularly. The amount of water for maple trees depends on the season as well as its age. Young maple trees require extra attention during their first two years as this is the crucial period of root growth which is vital for their survival. Older trees also require regular watering around dry seasons as maple trees thrive in moist soil. Before watering the tree, first inspect the soil’s moisture to determine how much water it needs.

2. Evenly spread mulch. Mulching around the maple tree provides many benefits as it retains moisture in the soil, minimizes the presence of weeds, and makes the garden bed attractive. Depending on the type of mulch used, remember to apply two to three inches of mulch around young trees to help keep them rooted. Older trees also require regular mulching if the soil feels dry.

3. Prune the tree around spring time. Pruning removes dead and damaged branches and prevents potential disease from spreading to healthier parts of the tree. It also helps develop a solid branch structure, and removes safety hazards like low growing branches or growth that may be subject to damage by a storm or passersby. Since maple trees produce sap, the best time to prune them is in springtime after the leaves appear. Pruning them in autumn or winter may cause the trees to “leak,” which, while not harmful to trees, slows down the healing process of pruned areas.

4. Schedule regular arborist visits. A certified arborist is knowledgeable and has the necessary experience to care for trees. Having regular visits from an arborist can be a great investment; these professionals are trained to detect any hidden problems a tree may have.
