Basic Tree Fertilizing Techniques

A growing tree requires fertilization throughout the year, but the amount of application changes as the it ages. The main purpose of fertilizer application is to boost the tree’s health so it can easily fight off pests, disease, and survive other environmental stresses. Although fertilizer is no guarantee the tree will never have problems, it can go a long way in protecting a budding tree.

When to Fertilize Your Tree

In most Northern climates, the best time to fertilize saplings is from springtime until colder autumn temperatures arrive. During this time, roots are better able to absorb the nutrients from the soil. The “tree food” is used for root development and other health-promoting functions. Applying nitrogen-rich fertilizer is essential during a tree’s developing years. Avoid using formulations high in nitrogen during the summer, because it can promote weak, new growth that could be easily damaged during the winter or rainy season.

Help Trees Thrive By Using Fertilizer

How Much Fertilizer Should I Use?

This is a tough question to answer, because different factors affect the amount of fertilizer to use. Careful observation and knowledge of plant physiology is useful in recognizing symptoms of nutrient-deficiency. Factors like the age of the plant, soil type, and the soil’s pH level affect the amount of fertilizer needed. The most effective way to determine the how much fertilizer a plant needs is to perform a soil test.

Tree Fertilization Techniques

  • Surface Application – The surface application technique is considered to be the simplest and most convenient way to fertilize. It involves using a spreader to distribute granular fertilizer on the soil. This method is applicable for any type of tree.
  • Sub-Surface Application – The fertilizer is applied below the ground surface using specialized tools. This technique is best used when the tree is surrounded by turf grass. This prevents the turf grass from absorbing the nutrients, robbing them from the tree’s root system. The sub-surface application can be accomplished using two different methods: drill-hole and injection.
  • Tree Injection Method – This tree fertilizing technique refers to the spraying of the tree with chemicals. The tree injection technique is a short-term solution used to address minor nutrient deficiency issues. This method is most effective when used during the spring, before tree growth. However, it could create holes on growing trees if not applied properly.
